Longhope Opera 2027

Longhope Opera is Scherzo’s annual Bel Canto festival, set against the idyllic backdrop of the south downs at Longhope Estate in Newton Valence, Hampshire. Since 2015, this unique summer event has welcomed several hundred guests each year to its charming grounds for an unforgettable experience of music, nature, and conviviality.

Guests are invited to stroll through the estate’s picturesque gardens while enjoying intimate chamber music performances, and partake in a delightful drinks reception. The evening culminates in a sparkling comic opera, presented by Scherzo Ensemble, followed by a seasonal dinner with stunning views over the South Downs.

Past seasons have featured gala concerts and beloved operatic comedies including The Marriage of Figaro, The Barber of Seville, Il turco in Italia, L’elisir d’amore, La Cenerentola, Don Pasquale, L'italiana in Algeri and Così fan tutte. This summer marks Scherzo Ensemble’s seventh production at Longhope, continuing a tradition that has enchanted audiences since 2019.

Attending a Performance

The festivities begin two hours prior to the show, allowing guests ample time to savour refreshments, explore the grounds, and enjoy chamber music performances. A drinks reception follows, where you can relish a glass of fizz and soak in the celebratory atmosphere before taking your seats in the auditorium. 

A leisurely 90-minute dining interval follows the first act, during which you can partake in one of our dining experiences. 

After dinner, the opera resumes against the backdrop of a setting sun, and guests are welcome to stay for digestifs or desserts until the grounds close at 11.30 pm.

Table Reservations

• For an additional charge, we have a limited number of decorated round tables in our Dining Marquee on the Old Tennis Court that you can reserve. Positioned in a prime location, these tables offer the best views of the South Downs and can comfortably accommodate parties of six, eight, and ten people.
• Your reservation includes a tablecloth, water, and flowers for added elegance. 
• Guests with reserved tables can either relish their own hampers or indulge in a three-course meal, served by attentive waiting-staff.
• We kindly request that tables take a collective decision as to how to dine, to ensure seamless service. 

Unreserved Tables

• You are welcome to bring your own hamper and find a spot on the lush lawns to enjoy a picnic.
• If you prefer a table, communal trestle tables in our Dining Marquee on the Old Tennis Court await, providing a cool and dry setting.

Accessibility

Longhope Opera is held in an outdoor, rural setting. Please note:

• The ground is uneven in places and may be challenging for those with limited mobility.
• There is no designated disabled parking on site, however guests can be dropped off and picked up at the top of the drive.
