Join us for a 5-day practical course, led by Barbara Jones, where you'll be learning all the essential skills to lime plaster onto strawbale walls. This course welcomes folks of all building abilities, and our build sites are renowned for attracting wonderful, welcoming people, so you'll feel at home on this course no matter whether you're a beginner or an experienced craftsperson.

We will be plastering a timber frame bungalow with Straw Bale Walls. Our Lime plastering course covers the practical aspects of plastering onto straw-bale walls, and by the end of the course, participants will have gained both knowledge and hands-on experience which includes;
- The differences between key coat, body coat and finish coat
- How to determine mixes for each type of coat
- A basic understanding of the Lime Cycle
- The benefits of lime plasters & how they can help to combat climate change
- Practical skills for applying key coat and dub out walls
- Use of different types of plastering tools
- Creating curvaceous reveals around windows and doors
- Practical application of body coat
- Finishing techniques
- After-care for external lime plaster (render)
- and much more!
Learning with us on this project will give you experience with plastering a straw bale building, with a focus on using low-impact, natural and recycled materials. Participants will receive a Lime Plastering certificate from the School of Natural Building.
ABOUT BARBARA JONES:
Barbara is the founder of SNaB (@schoolofnaturalbuilding), and the UK’s preeminent straw-bale building authority. She has decades of experience with straw bale building, clay and lime plastering, building physics and leading work on building sites across the UK and Europe. Her book, 'Building with Straw Bales; A Practical Manual for Self-Builders and Architects' is considered the essential guide to building with straw, and Barbara brings a wealth of knowledge and practical experience to every course. She will ensure course participants have a wonderful learning experience.
We aim to keep our courses accessible and offer a limited number of subsidised places for those truly unable to afford the standard rate. We trust participants to use their judgement when selecting this option. Places are limited and we encourage early booking via the button below

ACCESS:
We welcome participants of all physical abilities and neurotypes, and aim to make our courses as accessible and inclusive as possible. As course sites and learning environments vary, we encourage anyone with specific access needs or requirements to get in touch so we can discuss how best to support your participation.
ACCOMMODATION:
It is up to participants to organise their own accommodation and there is no capacity for camping on-site. There are various accommodation options nearby, including these found by your hosts: Teac Campbell B&B, Caisleáin Óir Hotel, Wheelhouse Glamping Pods, Maghery - Camping, and more included in the course info sheet.
TRANSPORTATION:
The School of Natural Building recognises the urgency of the climate crisis, and our work supports a low-carbon future rooted in closer connection with the earth, our ecosystems and each other. We encourage participants to travel by public or shared transport where possible. Before the course, we’ll connect participants via WhatsApp to help coordinate ride-sharing and accommodation.
