The Science Council is delighted to be welcoming Prof Carolyn Roberts to speak about A body of knowledge: unravelling murders through water science during British Science Week.

A body of knowledge: Unravelling murders through water science

Forensic hydrology is a specialized field within environmental science that uses hydrological methods to solve legal and criminal problems. This interdisciplinary field merges principles from environmental science, geology and chemistry to investigate and elucidate incidents involving flowing water. From tracing the origins of water contamination to determining the timing and sources of floods, forensic hydrology can play a crucial role in uncovering the truth behind water-related phenomena, including serious crimes such as murder. The webinar will be illustrated by case studies of murder victims found in rivers, canals and estuaries. Not for the squeamish!

Chair: Adam Donnan, CEO of the Institution of Environmental Sciences

Speaker: Prof Carolyn Roberts, Vice-President, Institution of Environmental Sciences & Professor Emeritus of Environment, and Fellow, Gresham College, London

About British Science Week

British Science Week is a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths that will place 7 - 16 March 2025!

British Science Week provides a platform to stimulate and support teachers, STEM professionals, science communicators and the general public to produce and participate in STEM events and activities. It provides a chance to celebrate the diverse people and careers in science and engineering!

British Science Week 2025 is supported by UK Research & Innovation (UKRI), which is the agency that brings together the seven Research Councils, Innovate UK and Research England. Funding from UKRI enables the BSA to deliver the core British Science Week activity; large grassroots campaign that aims to reach a diverse range of audiences, including those from disadvantaged communities and people who would not usually engage in science. #smashingstereotypes @ScienceWeekUK
