March 29th: PIANO DAY SPECIAL: Scott Flanigan Plays The Koln Concert

March 29th marks a very special day for pianists across the globe: it’s the 88th day of the year, and with 88 keys on a grand piano, the world celebrates International Piano Day! We’re marking the day with Scott Flanigan performing his stunning reinterpretation of one of the most famous piano concerts in history.

In January 1975, piano virtuoso Keith Jarrett played in Köln, Germany – a live recording of which became the best-selling solo jazz album of all time, with over four million sales worldwide. That the concert got off to the worst possible start helps explain its legendary status. The notoriously perfectionist Jarrett had asked for a grand piano. However, the organisers mistakenly ordered a baby grand that was in poor condition. Moreover, Jarrett arrived exhausted from an epic drive and suffering back pains. On seeing the baby grand he initially refused to play but was eventually persuaded. Despite or perhaps because of so many difficulties, he gave the performance of a lifetime.

To celebrate The Köln Concert’s 50th anniversary in 2025, Scott performed a dramatic tribute, and he’s delighted to bring it to Scott’s Jazz Club for the first time. As with Jarrett’s seminal performance, you can expect passionate improvisations inspired by the mood and the moment.
