Write Like a Mother Reading at AWP

Scribente Maternum is a powerful community of writers who identify as mothers. We each have our own stories and struggles, but we are all writers and we are all mothers. Our retreats and other events celebrate children and grandchildren as inspiration, while also providing the distance so necessary to be creative.

This public reading celebrates the works of writer-moms who have joined us at our retreats and other events. We are also pleased to hold space for any writer who is new to this community. Come socialize with other writer-moms and listen to or share work through an open-mic style reading. Indicate your interest in reading when you RSVP, and we'll send more details. All moms who write and those who support them are invited to share in this experience, but advanced registration is requested.

This event is free, and food and beverages will be available for purchase. Your voluntary donation at checkout helps us amplify the voices of those writers who may not otherwise be able to attend our events. Thank you for your support!

We are thrilled to feature author Christina Rivera on the Write Like a Mother stage. Christina Rivera is the author of MY OCEANS: Essays of Water, Whales, and Women (Northwestern University Press/Curbstone Books, March 2025). Her work has won a Pushcart Prize, the John Burroughs Nature Essay Award, and appeared in Orion, The Cut, The Kenyon Review, and Terrain.org, among other places. Christina credits the fragmentation of her writing to her two young children and is also the grateful recipient of creative residencies at Millay Arts, Craigardan, and the Wellstone Center. You can learn more about Christina and MY OCEANS at www.christinarivera.com. Check out this excerpt of her new book over at The Cut and join us on March 28 to join Christina and other writer-moms in person.

In a city known more for its glitz than its grit, Angel City Brewery is proud to rough things up a bit and work beneath the shiny surface. Their home in the Los Angeles Arts District is both brewery and canvas, the center of a revival for the city’s artists, musicians, hustlers, and craftspeople. It’s an LA that’s as ambitious as it is diverse — and their beer is no exception.
