Carbon Literacy for Language Professionals
If you’re a language professional who knows it’s important to combat climate change but you feel like you don’t know where to start, then this course is for you.
Dates and times:
- Thursday 10 September 2026, 09:30 am - 4:00 pm
- Thursday 17 September 2026, 09:30 am - 4:00 pm
Please note that although the event booking page indicates that the event starts and ends on Thursday 10 September, you must be able to attend both days, as this is mandatory for obtaining certification.
Location: online
What is it about?
In this course you will:
- learn about the science behind climate change
- explore why we should act, what our role is as language professionals and how language plays a role in climate (in)justice
- learn how we can reduce our carbon emissions
- start to create a decarbonisation plan for your business
- find out how to use your communication skills to have good climate conversations that don't feel awkward or scary
Who is it for?
Language professionals including translators, interpreters, proofreaders, editors, copywriters and more. You don't need to know loads about the climate already, just come as you are. Equally, if you already have a good handle on the topic but want a recognised certification, you are very welcome too! All you need is a willingness to learn and take part.
What's involved?
The course will take place online over two days, with plenty of interactive exercises. There will be comfort breaks and a lunch break planned in for each day.
You will also need to watch a video and complete a small amount of homework before the course begins.
In order to get certified, once you have attended the two online sessions, you will need to fill out an evidence form and make two pledges. We will then send this off to the Carbon Literacy Trust for assessment. There is an optional section at the end of session two during which you can work on your evidence form, ask us any questions and get guidance.
Why take part?
Our course is the only Carbon Literacy course designed exclusively for the language industry. We’ve worked as translators (and Josie as a copywriter) for a long time, so we know the realities and challenges you face. That means all the content is carefully tailored and highly relevant. We’ve packed it with activities and discussions to keep it interactive and engaging - and we want to hear your thoughts and questions throughout! Plus you’ll get 8 hours’ worth of CPD and a certificate upon successful submission of the end-of-course evidence form that you can log with your professional association.
Even better for those of you who love to share your achievements, you’ll get a shiny (virtual) Carbon Literate badge you can add to your website and email signature. It’s solid evidence that you are highly informed about the climate and sustainability. It could also help you attract clients from those fields who want to work with people with 1) knowledge of the climate crisis, and 2) shared values.
It's also a great stepping stone to further training.
Please note that you must be attend both sessions, complete the homework and submit the evidence form for assessment before you can be certified as Carbon Literate.
