Fundamentals of Printmaking 2 (intermediate) six week course
Fundamentals of Printmaking (2) intermediate
£180 (all materials included)
Six week course commencing on Tuesday 11th March 6.30-9.00pm. Continuing on the 18th, 25th March, 1st, 8th and 15th April 2025.
This course is designed to lead on from Fundamentals of Print 1, which was run at Seacourt Print Workshop in October and November 2024. Its aim is to provide the important step between making a print with tuition and being able to make your own print independently. Therefore, this course will focus on the careful and correct use of the equipment including paper, ink, rollers, acids and presses which are required in the making of your print. It will also include the cleaning and care of equipment to restore it to a condition suitable for its next use.
To enrol on this course you will ideally have completed Fundamentals of Print 1 (beginner) at Seacourt. However, it may also act as an effective refresher for someone who has had previous experience in both relief and intaglio printing but who needs to regain their confidence.
The course will again be run over six weeks divided equally into two. The first three weeks will look at relief printing and the following three weeks will look at intaglio printing.
The course will be run as an evening class, on Tuesday, but the hours have been altered to reflect the difficulty of arriving for a 6pm start; the hours are now 6.30–9pm.
The first three weeks: Relief Printing
The aim of this class is to build your confidence in the making of a relief print and to provide you with an understanding and familiarity of the materials and equipment which are involved. The use of all equipment and the stages of printing will be demonstrated and explained. After this you will be expected to do it yourself, with some guidance. Gradually you will need less.
The class will be centred on making your own three-colour lino print. This will be made using the reduction print method. To do this you will be asked to follow a series of prescribed weekly exercises. These will ensure that each week you cut lino, cut printing paper, mix ink, ink up your lino-block and make a print from it in a printing press. Afterwards, you will clean and store the equipment ready for its next use.
This weekly repetition is intended to reinforce your learning. Each week you will also be required to make a record of what is being taught so that you can refer to it during your future printmaking.
The second three weeks: Intaglio Printing
The second three weeks will delve deeper into intaglio printmaking - with a focus on correct colour mixing from a limited palette of colours, blends and overlaying colour. What paper to use, more tool experimentation and correct ways to edition work.

Accessibility
Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible. By their nature, some printmaking processes involve an amount of physical effort. Seacourt Print Workshop is on street level, and is accessible through the front doors in a wheelchair. It is fully wheelchair accessible, larger than standard doors and disabled toilet facilities. We recognise that everybody’s accessibility needs may differ, therefore please email us at info@seacourt-ni.org.uk to discuss any concerns you may have before booking.
