A RETRO-MODERN REIMAGINING OF LATIN BOLERO

The LatAm version of the love song or love ballad is called the bolero; they’re as engrained in the romantic psyche of Latin culture as the songs of Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and Chet Baker are revered in the English-speaking world. Miramar pays homage to the rose-petaled, dreamy vibe of old-school bolero music and carries the torch of “bolero beat” into the 21st century: a genre that rose to international fame in the 1960s by blending nostalgic bolero ballads with psych rock, bossa nova, funk, jazz and more.

The band’s exquisite sound emerges from the lush soundscapes of bandleader/pianist Marlysse Simmons-Argandoña combined with the vocal chemistry of singers Rei Álvarez and Laura Ann Singh. The full band features Gary Kalar on electric guitar, Giustino Riccio on percussion, and Dan Martinez on bass.

An offshoot of the acclaimed indie-salsa band Bio Ritmo, Miramar was one of the first Latin bands to perform on NPR’s Tiny Desk and has since introduced its unique take on bolero to audiences worldwide, releasing music on two of Brooklyn’s most iconic independent labels: Barbès and Daptone Records. The band is based between Richmond, San Juan and Brooklyn.
