We are excited to invite you to our upcoming parent evening focused on Functional Communication Training (FCT) as part of the ongoing SEEDLING Parent Training Series. This practical and supportive session will give parents and caregivers strategies to help reduce challenging behaviours by teaching children more effective ways to communicate their needs. Whether your child uses full sentences, gestures or a communication device to communicate, this information may be of support.
Date: Tuesday 7th of October
Time: 7:00pm – 8:30pm
Location: Delivered via Zoom
Overview:
This 1.5-hour session will be led by our highly qualified Behaviour Analysts. Parents and caregivers can gain insight into how behaviour is a form of communication – and how to replace challenging behaviours with more appropriate, functional communication.
Parents and caregivers will have the opportunity to gain practical tools to support the following:
- Understanding that behaviour is a form of communication, even when not expressed with words.
- Learning how to identify the purpose (function) behind a behaviour.
- Exploring the four main functions of behaviour: escape/avoidance, attention-seeking, access to items/activities, and automatic/sensory needs.
- Using Functional Communication strategies to teach children new, effective ways to communicate their needs.
- Supporting children with different communication abilities, from gestures and devices to full speech.
By learning and applying Functional Communication Training, parents can learn to be better equipped to meet their child’s needs in positive and proactive ways, helping to reduce challenging behaviours and helping to foster stronger communication at home and outside the home.
