WOODSON WALK IN WALNUT HILLS TO COMMEMORATE 100 YEARS OF BLACK HISTORY IN CINCINNATI, OHIO

Centennial Celebration Features a Free Historic Walking Tour and an Exclusive Gala Dinner Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Carter G. Woodson

Commemorating100 years since Dr. Carter G. Woodson established Negro History Week in 1926, which was expanded nationally into Black History Month in 1976. The purpose is to honor African American heritage, local historic preservation, and economic vitality within Cincinnati’s historic Walnut Hills neighborhood.

The festivities begin with a FREE Walking Tour between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., inviting residents and visitors to explore the deeply-rooted African American history built into the fabric of Walnut Hills. Guided and self-guided participants will visit critical landmarks that played pivotal roles in local and national civil rights, literature, and community-building. Featured stops along the tour itinerary include:

•Cincinnati Federation of Colored Women's Clubs: A historic cornerstone of community organizing, civic engagement, and mutual aid.

•The Manse Hotel Apartments: A legendary hospitality landmark famously listed in the Negro Motorist "Travelers" Green Book.

•Harriet Beecher Stowe House & Museum: A cultural hub exploring the legacy of the abolitionist movement and underground railroad history.

•Walnut Hills Business District: An opportunity to support local commerce and black-owned enterprises through community shopping.

Following the daytime tour, the community will gather for the prestigious Dr. Carter G. Woodson Celebration and Dinner from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Hosted at the Dr. Charles E. Dillard Memorial Center (791 E. McMillan Street), this ticketed gala serves as both a cultural commemoration and a fundraising initiative. Tickets are available for $100 per person, with proceeds directly supporting neighborhood preservation, local historical archives, and youth programming, and the Carter G. Woodson Memorial Scholarship Fund.
