Scarlet Soiree: A Gothic Victorian Ball
The Soiree will be held at the International Museum of Surgical Science. The theme is Gothic Victorian, with an eye for the beautiful, the mystical, and the unusual. If I had to name several media pieces that capture the feeling of the ball best, it would be Guiermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak, or perhaps his Frankenstein, with some Penny Dreadful thrown in for good measure.
I encourage our guests to go for historical costumes without being confined by accuracy. Go for the aesthetic of the Victorian, the moodiness of a world colored by a mourning queen, and the feel of an era that was touched by the feeling of infinite possibility. Don’t be afraid to make something beautiful at the risk of not having a place in time. Feel inspired by the setting, and the awe inspiring. Go for the magic.
Now for the more mundane details:

Time: 7PM to 11PM for guests; 6PM to 11PM for VIP ticket holders
Location: The International Museum of Surgical Science -1524 N Lake Shore Dr, Chicago, IL 60610
What will be provided: An open bar with drinks, a small welcome gift, snacks and desserts, a quartet playing moody music, a dance instructor teaching historical dances, a scavenger hunt with prizes, a museum to explore at your leisure, and of course, exquisite company. This and so many more surprises await you.
Potential Add ons: Optional dance class on day of ball - 10AM with our dance master Rosalind Phelps. Location TBD. $30
Dress code: Victorian, preferably late. Queen Victoria reigned from 1837 to 1901. The Good Prince Albert died in December, 1961. Historically inspired is entirely appropriate. The one rule here is: No crinolines. Any wearers of crinolines will be asked to leave these delightful cages at coat check. As the venue is a museum, with many fragile exhibits, we’re asking that crinolines be avoided. As bustles are significantly smaller, these are welcome.
