The SFU Choir, the PMSS Orchestra, and special guests unite for a powerful and deeply moving performance of The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace by Karl Jenkins.
This landmark concert marks the 20th anniversary of Artistic Director Melissa Ratcliff’s leadership of the choir, celebrated through one of the most compelling choral works of our time.
Composed in 1999 as the world approached a new millennium, The Armed Man is a bold and unflinching reflection on the cost of war and the enduring hope for peace. Beginning with the haunting 15th-century French melody L’Homme Armée, the work journeys through the rise of conflict, the terror and devastation of violence, and ultimately toward reconciliation and renewal. Drawing on texts from diverse traditions, including the Catholic Mass, the Islamic call to prayer, poetry, and historical writings, it speaks across cultures with a message that is as urgent today as ever.
With soaring choral writing, driving rhythms, and moments of profound stillness, this is music that challenges, mourns, and ultimately uplifts.
Featured soloists: Holly Steinson (soprano), Melissa Ratcliff (alto), Ming-Xuan Chung (tenor), and Cameron Killick (bass).
Tickets: $20 regular / $10 concession (for those facing financial barriers to attending the arts). Children under 6 are admitted free.
