Album Listening: Nothing New by Gil Scott-Heron

Released posthumously in 2014, Nothing New strips Gil Scott-Heron’s music back to its foundations. Recorded during the sessions for his final album I’m New Here, the record finds Gil alone at the piano, revisiting songs from across his career with little more than his unmistakable voice and keys.

Without the fuller arrangements of the originals, songs including Pieces of a Man, Better Days Ahead and Winter in America take on a different weight. Intimate, raw and reflective, Nothing New offers a beautiful final perspective on one of music’s most important poets and storytellers.

A time to appreciate and absorb this iconic record on vinyl, start to end.
