No Death, No Magic: Year 4, an evening length work exploring life and death with modern dance and magic
A magic show about life and death. Using dance as a vehicle for “magical” gestures. Allowing the audience to feel what it is like to lose a loved one or to grieve someone they have already lost. Creating a ceremony to celebrate life. East Bay artist Danny Nguyen premieres his show No Death, No Magic: Year 4 on January 27 and 28, 2024, 7:30-9pm at Parker Electric Foundation in Oakland, California as a part of its Dance Up Close/East Bay Series.
There is a magical nature to birth and death. We do not get a choice in getting born and choosing when to die. Oftentimes in magic it seems like we have a choice even though it might be controlled by the magician. For example, a magician can ask you to “randomly” choose a card, but that card choice has been predetermined. We feel as though we have a free choice and even though in reality we don’t have a choice, we can still experience the magic. No Death, No Magic: Year 4 is a solo performance project with East Bay artist Danny Nguyen which combines his work in contemporary modern dance with magic tricks, offering a window into his personal journey grappling with his mother’s death during 2020.
