Permaculture Urban Garden Design Course

Sun 15 May 2022 10:00 AM - Sun 5 Jun 2022 3:00 PM AEST

Revesby, 2212

Description

A unique opportunity for Young People of different faiths, cultures and backgrounds to work on a common goal: To restore life to the earth, our home.

During this exciting component of the Synchronised Serenity Project, you will learn the foundations of how best to be a steward on earth through *Permaculture.

Over 4 days, you will receive theoretical and practical knowledge to help you establish an organic garden wherever you live. Trained by experts in the field, you will also come together and work on establishing a 'real, live, permaculture site'. Put your theory to the test as you get your hands and feet dirty, ensuring every element of the Permaculture design is implemented in its rightful place.

From raised garden beds and growing seedlings, to water harvesting, composting and worm farming - you will clock up an additional 40 hours of supervised practical training before receiving your Permaculture Design Certification.

Places for this Permaculture course are strictly limited. Only serious and responsible applicants should apply. Originally we had capped the maximum age at 25 years old. Due to increased interest, we are now able to accept applicants up to 35 years of age, who upon their acceptance might also be able (where deemed appropriate by Shifa Institute) to play an additional mentoring role during the course.

Formal Theory and Initial Practical Training (Phase 1) will take place over 4 Sundays as follows:

  • Sunday 15 May 2022
  • Sunday 22 May 2022
  • Sunday 29 May 2022
  • Sunday 5 June 2022

Times:

  • 10am to 12pm (Theory 2 hours)
  • 12pm to 1pm (Lunch break)
  • 1pm to 3pm (Practical 2 hours)

Venue: Permaculture site is located in Revesby, NSW and address will be provided upon confirmation of your place.

Phase 2 Supervised practical implementation of the Permaculture Design on site (up to 40 hours required to receive Permaculture Design Certification) will commence in June 2022 and will be open on multiple days during the week. The days selected will be in accordance with the availability of most participants.

This Permaculture Urban Garden Design Course is designed for young people aged 16-35 years of age from different cultural and religious backgrounds. Only consider registering if you are committed to attend both Phase 1 and Phase 2. Certificates of completion will be given to those who complete the entire program.

* Permaculture integrates land, resources, people and the environment through mutually beneficial synergies – imitating the no waste, closed-loop systems seen in diverse natural systems. Permaculture studies and applies holistic solutions that are applicable in rural and urban contexts at any scale. It is a multi-disciplinary toolbox including agriculture, water harvesting and hydrology, energy, natural building, forestry, waste management, animal systems, aquaculture, appropriate technology, economics and community development.

This Permaculture Design Course allows you to be the change you want to see in the world. Based on Bill Mollison’s Permaculture Designers’ Manual, it provides skills and solid knowledge in Permaculture design as a science that can create abundant ecosystems sustainably in the backyard, a small farm or on a larger broad acre landscape.

The course teaches you how to design sustainable living systems for a wide variety of landscapes and climates. It includes the application of Permaculture principles to food production, home design, construction, energy conservation and generation, and explores alternative economic structures and legal strategies supporting permaculture solutions.

You will be taught by highly skilled and experienced teachers including Hassan Elsetohy and Salah Hammad.
