Tour Shilstone’s Historic Landscape, Devon
A rare opportunity to explore the historic landscape at Shilstone with our resident archaeologist, Abi Gray.
Shilstone House occupies a truly exceptional site, at the head of a steep-sided valley containing evidence of occupation from later prehistory to the present day. The landscape is rich in archaeology and through both excavation and geophysical survey we have been able to reveal its history and development.
For this special guided tour our guests will spend the afternoon rambling through the terraced formal gardens, before leaping over the ha-ha, and into the nationally important water garden with its ornamental and cascading rills. Along the way, they will visit the walled kitchen garden, with its very own banqueting house, and see the remnants of the only known, late-17th century, Italianate water theatre.
After the tour there will be tea and cake served at the Devon Rural Archive.
The tour will last approximately one hour and thirty minutes, and will include steep slopes and rough ground. Sturdy footwear is essential. Please note this tour will be outside only and will go ahead in all weathers.
Tickets £18. Food and drink available to purchase from on-site café.
