Sho Humphries x Tyler Donkoh-Halm Next Gen Ukulele Workshop + Concert!

Round out the OitaATX Japan Summer Festival weekend with two ukulele workshops & a concert by Ukulele Magazine-featured next generation ukulele players Tyler Donkoh-Halm & Sho Humphries! 

This will be Tyler's first ever time in Austin - don't miss it! This year, Tyler became the first person to graduate with a Master's degree from the Berklee College of Music on the ukulele. Tyler and Sho will both be teaching workshops on spicing up simple arrangements - some proficiency in basic chords (C, D, F, G, A, Bm) and strumming is recommended, but participants of all levels will learn something to take home.

Spicing up Your Chord Progressions is a workshop that gets you playing more than what’s just written on the page! Using methods from the Jazz pedagogical practice such as Chord Extensions, Chord Substitution, and Reharmonization, this class will help keep your covers and originals sounding fresh and never repetitive!

Intro to Reharmonization is a workshop that will take a simple 3 chord song & spice it up through the principles of Functional Harmony. Attendees will learn both the theory and practice in changing chords in a song to make a song more your own.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own music stands, though some are provided.

Austin blues-rock meets heart-on-your-sleeve singer-songwriting in Los Angeles based Sho Humphries' music. Raised in Austin's keep-it-weird indie scene, Sho found their passion for performing early on in life. Inspired by modern Hawaiian ukulele players like Jake Shimabukuro, Sho spent their time in middle and high school cramming homework Mon-Thurs to play shows on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night. After the pandemic put a stop to live shows in Austin, Sho took the opportunity to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, graduating with a degree in Songwriting in May of 2025. Following the Berklee network, Sho moved to Los Angeles, and has since been working on original music, starting with their upcoming single, Sagami-Ono.

Tyler Donkoh-Halm is a Boston based ‘Ukulele player and multi-instrumentalist whose effortless fusion of jazz, pop, and R&B will keep you grooving! From somber singer songwriter tunes to swinging uke solos, come listen to Tyler take the ‘Ukulele through styles you’ve never heard it in before. Back in 2024, Tyler, along with uke virtuoso Sho Humphries, performed at the International ‘Ukulele Festival of Hawaii, an event that's shown the spotlight to ‘Ukulele super-stars such as Jake Shimabukuro, Taimane Gardner, and Kalei Gamiao. Now having completed both his undergraduate Music Performance degree, and his Masters degree at Berklee College of Music, and Berklee’s Global Jazz Institute respectively, Tyler is not only a well rounded instrumentalist, but also a seasoned producer, teacher, and sound engineer. This versatility allows him to engage within many musical spaces at the same time, leading to a unique multi-perspective sound.
