Shore Leave - Chris Greive & Graeme Stephen live at Brown's of Leith

Tue 24 Nov 2026 6:30 PM - 9:45 PM Browns of Leith, EH6 6QS

Shore Leave is delighted to present Chris Greive on trombone and Graeme Stephen on guitar, long-time collaborators in performance, composition and improvisation. Founders of the award-winning trio NeWt alongside drummer Chris Wallace, they have continued to forge innovative and creative paths, together and with others.

Chris Greive is an educator, producer, trombonist and composer with 30 years professional experience across a range of environments from curriculum development to small group jazz, production collaborations with rappers/singers, lecturing in formal education (RCS, Glasgow) and multiple performance areas from jazz orchestras (as lead trombonist) through to fully improvised music. From 2017 as music producer he has contributed to and created projects that have received national airplay (BBC Radio 6Music, BBC Radio2, Gilles Petersons WorldwideFM), a diverse group including singers, DJs, rappers, songwriters, artists and spoken word creatives.

Graeme Stephen leads and contributes to a multitude of musical projects in Scotland and overseas, playing a wide array of styles from free improvised jazz to Scottish folk. His peerless improvisational skills and talent for composition make him one of Scotland’s most exciting musical talents. Influences include Metheny, Schofield, through to the sonic inventiveness of Bill Frisell and the fragmented worlds of James Blood Ulmer, Marc Ribot and David Torn. Published recordings include: Films (scores for Nosferatu and Sunrise ), Distances (with Zapp4). The Throw (Projector), Vantage Points (Graeme Stephen Sextet) and Water Soluble (Graeme Stephen Trio). "Stephen's music speaks loudly of ambition, imagination, and harmonic adventure yet teemed with the sort of tuneful realisation that swells the heart" Rob Adams, The Herald

Their Brown’s set will include a new iteration of their treatment of Led Zeppelin’s Moby Dick, a collaboration with Tim Taylor, who took residence in Brown's in 2025 culminating in his show Weights and Measures. He performed his prose poem work “Ode to the Leith Water Shoals” at Brown's last year with band Hansklammer. It was subsequently published in The Leither.

“I am tormented with an everlasting itch for things remote… to sail forbidden seas, and land on barbarous coasts.” Ishmael, Moby Dick
