A deferred MBA application is not something a candidate gets to submit twice. There is no next cycle to apply in as a deferred candidate again. If the profile isn't ready by the April deadline, the only remaining path is the standard one: years of full-time work, then applying as a regular candidate, without the advantage of securing a spot before that work experience even begins.

This session breaks down what senior year has to build and/or refine before that deadline, and how admissions committees read the evidence a candidate produces along the way.

Deferred MBA candidates are evaluated on the same two arguments as any MBA applicant: why this person, this path, now, and what they bring to a class of peers. Without a work history to draw on, the entire trajectory argument has to be carried by what shows up in your experiences up to the senior year, and not every activity carries the same weight. That is what this session is about.

This session is designed for candidates who are serious about pursuing a deferred MBA and want to understand not only what a strong application requires, but what the admissions committees are assessing, and whether their current activities are building the case they think they are.

During the session, we will discuss:

  • What separates a senior year that portrays intentionality from one that reads as a list of separate accomplishments or interests.
  • Why certain extracurriculars stop functioning as contribution evidence once too many other candidates list the same one.
  • How the decisions made this fall become difficult or impossible to correct once the application is underway.

Susan Berishaj, founder of Sia Admissions, will walk through what admissions committees are evaluating in a deferred MBA candidate's senior year, and what separates candidates whose activities happen to look good from candidates whose activities build one coherent case for admission.
