Sion Hill Hall, Thirsk
An important Grade II* house of outstanding neo-Georgian architectural detail, designed in 1912 by the renowned architect Walter H Brierley of York, also known as ‘The Lutyens of the North’. The Arts and Crafts period house, being one of the last to be built in Yorkshire prior to the Great War, is exquisitely furnished, hosting a collection of fine antiques and works of art.
After many years of neglect, the extensive 5 acres of gardens have been lovingly restored and created by Michael Mallaby to include a formal parterre with clipped hornbeam and yew, a Long Walk with herbaceous and shrub borders, charming woodland style Lower Walk overlooking the River Wiske, traditional Kitchen Garden with vegetables, fruit and flowers, and a Centenary Rose Garden.
Tickets: £32 including a personal welcome and introductory talk by Michael Mallaby, followed by a guided tour of the house and gardens. A cream tea (or coffee) with cakes will be served in the original Edwardian kitchens after the tour.
Access: There is wheelchair access to the ground floor of the house (one shallow step at the entrance which has a ramp if necessary). We require prior notification so that the ramp can be put in place. The first floor does not have wheelchair access, however, there is a wide staircase with shallow steps and sturdy banister handrail suitable for those with a walking aid. There are a couple of small steps in the garden, with gravelled paths, also some uneven cobbled surfaces.
Restrictions: No photography in the house. No dogs.
