To kick-off the Year of the Snake, Siren Screen invites you to an intimate evening of myth, metamorphosis, and mesmerising cinema in a double bill of short film 𝓢𝓱𝓮 (𝓢𝓷𝓪𝓴𝓮) & feature film 𝓖𝓻𝓮𝓮𝓷 𝓢𝓷𝓪𝓴𝓮! 🐍

We’ll be exploring the symbolism of Snake, shedding skin and shining light on the cultural and mythical role of the serpentine. Through two thought-provoking films delving into female competition and doubles, we’ll unravel the power and peril of transformation, alongside feminist tropes on the fantastical monstrous feminine.

We’re thrilled to be joined by director Renee Zhan who will introduce her award-winning 2023 short film 𝓢𝓱𝓮 (𝓢𝓷𝓪𝓴𝓮). The film follows 16-year-old Fei as her inner turmoils take stop-motion shape amidst British societal pressures and her Chinese familial ones, all while she navigates her role as a violinist in a youth orchestra.

Following this, we’ll journey back to the mythic past in 𝓖𝓻𝓮𝓮𝓷 𝓢𝓷𝓪𝓴𝓮 (1993), directed by the legendary Tsui Hark and starring the mesmerising Maggie Cheung. This visually stunning adaptation of The Legend of the White Snake tells the tale of two serpent sisters whose bond is tested when they fall for the same mortal man. This psychedelic and zany gem from the Hong Kong New Wave was made to be seen on the big screen.

Please note, Farr’s screening room is only accessible by stairs, so is unfortunately not accessible to wheelchair users — apologies for any inconvenience.
