Description
Join sissy in this celebration of her recently published book Therapy: the basics and hear from some new and established voices in the therapy field, describing their unique approaches and take on the book. The evening will consist of 10min talks and/or readings from the book with the themes of black feminisms in psychotherapy, what integration of theories means, the transpersonal and the relational, embodied theories and kinetic theories, reconnecting with the radical roots of the person-centred approach, the concept and value of care and more. Some confirmed speakers are: Roz Carroll, Paul Christelis, Rachael Cowie, Karmela Jones, Suzanne Keys, Lynne Segal, Spiros Philippas - more tbc!
Therapy: the basics is an introductory book to psychotherapy and its different theoretical approaches. It attempts to demystify and de-stigmatise therapy by answering some common questions posed by prospective clients.
sissy has presented an accessible overview of psychotherapy and counselling, mapping a variety of the most popular approaches from psychoanalysis and cognitive behaviour therapy to embodied and creative therapies, whilst giving an overview of the roots of psychotherapy in traditional and indigenous healing methods. The book also acknowledges criticisms of current approaches, with their neo-liberal heteronormative Eurocentric perspective, and considers where therapy stands in today’s globalised world. The book's structure allows different umbrella theories and their developments to be explored separately but also in relation to one another.
Your ticket includes some finger food and a drink and it will cover the cost for the evening. Any profits will be shared equally amongst the speakers.
If you already have the book, feel free to bring it along and sissy will be signing copies. If you don't have the book, copies will be available on the day.
The venue is fully accessible and there is some parking on the streets around it.
