SMD online seminar 2024: dr. Maria Zimmermann (GER)

In May we have the pleasure to welcome a second presenter at the SMD online seminars 2024. Dr. Maria Zimmeramnn from the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL, Germany) will share her group's work in a presentation entitled: "Quantifying gut microbiota-host metabolic interactions".

Her research group combines computational modelling and multi-omics data integration to investigate how microbes adapt to their surroundings, and how metabolic adaptations of individual bacteria shape the functional outcome of microbial communities and their interactions with the environment. They develop mathematical models that describe the underlying molecular exchange processes based on time-resolved and/or spatial metabolomic measurements to quantify microbial community and microbiota-host interactions. Combining in vitro and in vivo experimental data with such models has revealed that gut bacteria can substantially contribute to the host metabolism of medical drugs.
