Before it was LA: A Morning at Kuruvungna Village Springs
Many of us live in LA without ever learning about the history of the land, or of those who walked it before us.
This is an opportunity to explore one of the original Tongva-Gabrielino villages, tucked away in the heart of West LA. We'll walk around the sacred springs – a critical and often missed piece of LA history – and hear the story of the land and its reclamation.
We'll start as a group with intros and questions designed to help us get to know each other. Then, we'll join Bob Ramirez, a descendant of the Gabrielino people, for a discussion on the history of the village and sacred springs. Bob has spent the last 10 years restoring the land and educating the public on its history and culture.
You can learn more about Bob's work on his website.
What to expect: We’ll start with a small group discussion, and a walk around the grounds. Then we’ll join Bob's talk about the history of the springs — it's open to the public, but plenty of space and time for questions.
Parking: There's a dedicated parking lot. Look for the banner that says "Kuruvungna" on the outside of a metal gate.
What to bring: It can get hot and dusty, especially in August. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and a water bottle. There's not too much walking, so open or closed-toe shoes both work.
