Building upon the two previous screenings that explored the Filipino people’s resistance against US imperialism and semi-feudalism, the final leg of the Bayan Ko series continues its examination of the Philippine struggle by spotlighting how systemic corruption robs local communities of their right to a dignified life.
The problem of bureaucrat capitalism in the Philippines has been milking public coffers dry, leading to poor public services that further marginalises already vulnerable communities. The programme consists of a feature and short film, centering the story of Indigenous peoples as they navigate a bureaucratic system that refuses to acknowledge their claim to their ancestral lands, and expressing collective rage in the midst of a recent flood control project scandal.
A warm (vegan and gluten free) meal will be served at the start of the event. We will then kick off the programme with a short presentation outlining the films. After the screening, we will take part in a propaganda collage poster-making workshop, where everyone will have the opportunity to transform their own responses to corruption into a collective visual output. This exercise takes inspiration from the creative tradition that Filipino activists are known for, using visual art to express calls for accountability and social change. Channel all your frustrations against the system and join us for an afternoon of learning and creation!
Many thanks to the Roma Cultural Centre for hosting us again and Jillian Mendoza for the final poster of this series! This project is being developed by Solidarity Screenings alongside Filipino activists here in Glasgow.
