SOLID JOY PRESENTS - THE BATTLE OF CABLE STREET 90th ANNIVERSARY PARTY

Solid Joy is returning with a party to celebrate the anniversary of the battle of Cable Street!

On Sunday 4 October 1936, Oswald Moseley and his British Union of Fascists tried to march through the east end of London, in a bid to terrorise the Jewish communities that lived there. They did not pass. Masses of local people turned out to defend themselves and their neighbours. Despite heavy police violence to try and facilitate the fascist march, Moseley and the BUF were humiliated and re-directed in the opposite direction. Hundreds of thousands of people took to the street, erected barricades and refused to allow fascism to walk through their streets. 

The anti-fascist action on that day did not happen in a vacuum, it was partly the result of years of solidarity and mutual aid in communities struggling with low pay, insecure work and exploitative landlordism. Conditions still prevalent now. It is in this context, along with the growing strength of fascism in this country that we want to commemorate this great victory and ask what lessons it has for us today, as we seek to counter fascists in the streets, and destroy the conditions that make fascism possible in the first place.

Following the unhinged and joyous success of the maypole at our last party, we can confirm we will have activities in the courtyard to encourage play, joy and collectivity.

Solid Joy is a space where we act with care towards each other - transphobia, homophobia, misogyny and classism are not welcome.  

All funds raised go to good causes organising in our city, and the organisers take no payment. As ever, if you can't afford a ticket please reach out via email or IG dm (@solidjoy.brum), and we will put one aside for you, no questions asked.
