Tune In: Supporting employees living with cancer

Fri 18 Oct 2024 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM BST Online

Cancer touches every one of us. One in every two people will face a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. In the UK alone, 890,000 working-age people are living with cancer, and around 700,000 are balancing work while caring for a loved one with the disease. But the struggle goes beyond the illness itself. Half of those living with cancer are afraid to tell their employers and over a third feel isolated at work during their cancer journey. This issue is only set to grow as our workforce ages and cancer rates increase among younger adults.

Employers play a fundamental role in their employees’ lives, particularly those facing cancer. Empathy, flexibility, and a culture of care can create a workplace that not only supports employees facing cancer but also demonstrates a commitment to overall employee wellbeing. It’s time for businesses to step up, show compassion, and cultivate a culture of understanding and support.

Join us for an enlightening discussion as we 'Tune In' to the experiences of employees living with cancer.

For this conversation, we will be joined by:

  • Lindsay Bridges, Global Head of HR, DHL Supply Chain, who has spoken openly about her cancer diagnosis and treatment, and the support she has received from colleagues.
  • Anna Dunn, Associate, Working With Cancer and cancer coach, to share guidance on supporting employees with cancer in the workplace.
  • Sally Pritchett, CEO, Something Big, a passionate leader and a well-established expert in workplace culture.

Our expert speakers will explore:

  • Tackling the stigma of cancer, including what not to say and how to give employees the confidence to navigate difficult conversations.
  • The role of communication in creating a supportive and empathetic work environment for employees facing long-term illness.
  • The role of Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and support groups in providing shared lived experiences and support.
  • How businesses can support prevention and early detection awareness.

Join us to gain actionable insights and help make your workplace fairer, healthier, and happier for all employees.

About ‘Tune In’:

At Something Big, we create a meaningful difference through our work and the way we do business, on a mission to create fairer, healthier, and happier workplaces. We have long understood the importance of creating inclusive workplaces where employees feel safe to be themselves, do their best work, and thrive. To do this, we need to listen and learn from different communities, and provide a platform for these voices to be heard. We are listening to the stories of underrepresented groups, understanding their needs, and sharing their everyday challenges so we can learn how the workplace can be better for all.
