Description
What is Biodanza?
During Biodanza sessions we bring our awareness back to our body, which helps us to be more expressive in our movement and to open to the nourishing feeling that comes through freely expressing ourselves and the tenderness of human connection.
In Biodanza there are no set dance steps to learn - rather than performance, we are more interested in a feeling of joint connection to rhythm and creative expression.
Practicalities
𝗣𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 - We will start on time - do help yourself to a cup of tea in the kitchen as you arrive. If you arrive and we have already started - please just enter quietly and join with us once you are ready.
Front Door Access - For security, the church requests that we keep the front door locked - this also helps to keep us secure - if the door is closed when you arrive - you will need to ring the bell to the right side of it.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗿 - It's a good idea to bring a water bottle and to wear light and loose clothing, which you will feel comfortable to move in.
𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 - Afterward please stay for teas, fruit and chat (participants bring and share). Kitchen facilities are available for afterward.
𝗔𝗴𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁 - In the session the group will gradually together create a state of deep relaxation and on occasion explore themes such as sensual movement and affective touch- for this reason the events are limited to adults only. Biodanza is also beneficial for children to help build relational and creative skills - please keep in touch with this group to hear more about future Biodanza events dedicated especially for families.

Your Facilitator
I'm Jono - and I facilitate the monthly Southampton Biodanza Group. I discovered Biodanza in 2011 in Spain rather by accident as I went to an event, without any recent dance experience, and not really knowing what was involved. It obviously had an impact on me, because a few months later, I moved from Spain back to England and I felt the need to seek Biodanza here. Gradually I came to realise that Biodanza was enriching for my life on lots of different levels - it helped to improve my self-understanding and self-acceptance, which in turn supports building stronger relationships. It also gave me a strong sense of feeling part of a community. I know that these benefits are widely shared by many participants and they are possible through the Biodanza exercises focussing on non-verbal communication, body awareness and movement expression - this supports personal development journeys and gives us a sense of belonging to help us flourish and discover new potentials for ways of expressing and being.
I completed my 5 year Biodanza Facilitator training at the London School of Biodanza in 2023.
Your Local Group
Our group meets monthly, usually the first Friday evening of each month at Bitterne United Reformed Church. It is open to all experience levels - from those who could be curious to try Biodanza to those who are on a deep development journey through the practice. Biodanza is full of choice and invitations, which means that it can be adapted for people from all ages, backgrounds, fitness levels.
