A Sound Connections Knowledge and Practice Exchange

£35 freelance rate; £60 organisations with a turnover of less than £250k; £90 organisations with a turnover of more than £25.

In our annual gathering this year we will be exploring what power and privilege means in music education.

Hosted by Talia Randall, speakers from outside the music education sector including Imrana Mahmood (Arts Educationalist), Reveal Poison (Poet and Rap Artist), Claire Mera Nelson (Director of Music, Arts Council England) and Sahar Summer (Wired4Music) will offer their perspective, insight and provocation.

Confirmed breakout sessions:

  • Grappling with lyrics: Chaos in the studio (Colin Brent and young person TBC: Bollobrook Youth Centre)
  • Using music to promote empathy between newly arrived groups and host communities (Jim Pinchen and Raghad Haddad: I Speak Music (Surrey Music Hub))
  • Developing and embedding Youth Voice in a music education hub (Jane da Costa: Tri-borough Music Hub)
  • Perspectives on inclusive practice (Vicci Worthy: Daisi; Neil Phillips: Awards for Young Musicians; Michael Davidson: Music Net East; convened by Adam Cookson: Youth Music)
  • #SaveOurMusic: youth voice and advocacy (Dafydd Evans and LMM Alumni: London Music Masters)
  • Working with the Youth and Community Sector (Emily Reddon: London Youth)
  • Orchestrating Change and Growing Musical Landscapes Together (Rachel Thame and Deborah Woollaston: Moor to Sea Music, Devon)
  • What is Inclusion? Music Making is the Key (John Kelly and Douglas Noble: Drake Music)
  • Is it time for a power shift? Looking at the role of non music specialists in delivering music activity with families and under 3’s in the community (Rosie Adediran: Rhymes Reimaged)

During lunch, delegates will be able to have Development Needs Analysis one-to-one sessions with the Sound Connections team.

We are experimenting with a new format that will focus around a Long Table, where we hope all delegates will be able to bring their ideas forward and engage meaningfully with our large events.

This event is open to anybody working with children and young people and music for example:

  • Regional and national music and arts organisations practitioners and staff
  • Freelance consultants, project managers, researchers
