Description
Your favorite winter shorebird workshop returns! Join us for a class on shorebird identification taught by ornithologist Lesley Handa of Handa Ornithology Lab, whose research specializes in studying shorebirds in the San Diego wetlands. Instruction to basic identification of common shorebirds will be provided in a classroom setting, followed by a few hours in the field to apply what we learned. We will discuss shorebird ecology, migration, and conservation and provide suggestions on how to best practice shorebird identification. All levels of experiences are welcome. Some spotting scopes will be provided. Please bring your own scopes, binoculars, snacks, water and lunch.
Schedule:
- 7:30-8:00am - Arrival and check-in
- 8:00-9:00am - Lecture (Dudek office*, Liberty Station)
- 9:00-9:30am - Travel to the Field Site at Sea World Drive
- 9:30-10:30am - Field Observations at Sea World Drive
- 10:30-11:00am - Travel to Robb Field
- 11:00am-12:00pm - Observations at Robb field
- 12:00–12:30pm - Sack Lunch
- 12:30-1:30pm - Observations at Robb Field

Lesley is an ornithologist and geographer with experience in research, aviculture, rehabilitation, education, conservation, and advocacy that spans 20+ years. Her specialty in research combines GIScience and ornithology and she holds a B.A. in English, a B.S. in Biology, a GIS Technician Certificate, and an M.S. in GIScience. Her research includes trends of wintering shorebirds with study sites including San Diego Mission Bay, Famosa Slough, San Diego River, and the Sweetwater River. Other research projects include waterbird studies and demographics of naturalized parrots in San Diego County. Lesley enjoys opportunities to teach others about the rich avifaunal diversity San Diego County has to offer. Lesley is the Lead Ornithologist and serves on the Conservation Committee for the San Diego Bird Alliance (formerly known as the San Diego Audubon Society). She also serves as a Board member of the Friends of Famosa Slough and for the California Bluebird Recovery Program.

**If the event is canceled due to rain, another alternate date will be identified and participants will be notified of any cancellations or changes at least 3 days before the scheduled event (Wednesday Jan 22, 12pm). If you cannot attend on the rescheduled date, please notify the workshop organizer through the event page, and you will be issued a full refund.
**Refund Policy: Full refund up to 7 days before workshop (must cancel your ticket by January 19th at 12pm PST). Cancellations after that date will be refunded only if the available ticket is sold.
