In a relaxed studio atmosphere, this two day workshop will be divided into 3 sessions: working from a live model throughout the workshop, the initial session will focus on a classic atelier approach to a well-drawn head; planes, proportion and properties of light.

As the workshop progresses, greater levels of expression are explored whilst a solid foundation of construction is maintained. Each session will begin with a demonstration and discussion of portrait techniques and experiences. The instruction will build from the previous session and incorporate more expressive methods as we all progress, with the final session incorporating mass drawing techniques.

An American native, Ken Cosgrove trained at Ringling School of Art & Design where he earned a BFA studying classical painting techniques. His early years as an abstract painter were strongly influenced by the simplistic works of Robert Motherwell and Franz Kline. As well as his BFA he has spent time studying under Mo Mitchell, Loren Willford, Mary Arther and Mark Tennant and has exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Society of Oil Painters, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, Royal Society of Marine Artists as well as with SWAc, the Brownstone Gallery and his work is found in many permanent & private collections across the US and UK.

In recent years he is more focused on the development of portrait and figure work and is an academician with the South West Academy of Fine & Applied Arts (SWAc). His work now is informed largely by the Ashcan School of painters from the early and mid 1900s.
