SWA Summer School 2024 - Tom Shepherd, Animals in Watercolour (1 day)
Sun 18 Aug 2024 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM BST
South West Art, EX10 8LP
Description
The character, movement and shapes of animals and birds make them the perfect subject for loose and free flowing watercolours.
You will learn a few basic yet very important concepts around constructing your subject, and how this creates rhythm and life. Then discover how these foundations can be tied in beautifully with the expressive nature of the medium.
Everyone will then be able to spend time exploring a few different approaches to creating wild and free watercolours of your own.
This course will be suitable for any experience level as the smaller groups allow tailored tuition to each individual.
Tom Shepherd started off his art career creating custom artwork on guitars using graffiti pens. Making a move towards a brush and more traditional mediums opened up a whole new world to Tom, and he hasn’t looked back since. He loves to paint in acrylics and oils, and most recently has found a love of watercolour. Whilst Tom loves painting a wide variety of subjects, especially if the light is doing something interesting, he is always drawn back to the place where his first two passions met; painting wildlife, in particular birds. Tom found that "the free flowing and immediate nature of watercolour seems to lend itself so well to capturing the fleeting moments of wildlife; along with their movement, character and colours".
Tom's work has become widely collected in the UK and more recently, internationally. He has been a highly commended finalist in the world-renowned Wildlife Artist of the Year, on several occasions and where possible likes to combine his art work with conservation efforts close to his heart. As well as involvement with various group exhibitions geared towards raising funds for wildlife and conservation; he also contributes a portion of sales each year to UK based organisations such as WWT (Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust); and to date has raised multiple thousands of pounds for these causes.
Tom has become a highly regarded, and much sought after tutor. As well as running his own workshops, he travels all over the UK teaching and demonstration for Art Groups & Societies and leads painting holidays in beautiful rural France.
