One of the most commonly heard problems and queries we hear at South West Art are about colour mixing! We have heard both first-hand and through many of Matt's students, that his simplification of this tricky theory has hugely helped them to make a leap forward in their painting skills. 

In this afternoon course Matt will provide the basics of colour theory and how to use it to your advantage in any form of painting. He will demonstrate each aspect of the theory from how to consistently mix any colour, anytime, and to how colour can be applied to improve your paintings.

Matt (also know as "Pidge") is predominantly known as a landscape artist painting exclusively in oil paint, living and working in East Devon. He is largely self taught and for over a decade staunchly painted outdoors only, incorporating his love of being out in the countryside, especially near water, allowed him to develop his passion for painting. Working from life outdoors is an intensive, wonderful and sometimes frustrating way to learn the art of painting, one that forces you to work quickly and intuitively, and making the swift & efficient mixing of accurate colours is essential.  

Now painting both outdoors and in, he uses his love of the sea and the coastline to create his paintings through a mix of painting from life and his imagination. Over the years he has had many students, a number of which have gone on themselves to sell their work successfully, with helping others to develop their own creativity being a love second only to that of painting itself for him.

In addition to Matt's guidance you will also have John Rabbetts; born in Southampton, John is a west country artist based in Cornwall having previously been a prominent artist in west Dorset. John has won several awards and has been painting for three decades. His main interest is in the human form but he is also known for his landscapes and use of colour muted colours. John will be demonstrating the skills that Matt will guide you through to give an accurate and ideal visual aid to work to.
