Speck&Tech is the digital community of Trentino, which, since 2016 - over a beer and a slice of speck - has brought together developers, data scientists, researchers, designers, and more broadly people passionate about technology. In over nearly 10 years, it has organized more than a hundred free events, open to everyone, with a simple and effective format: a couple of talks centered around a different theme each time.
Quantum computing is one of those topics everyone has heard about, but few people can confidently explain. What makes quantum computers different from traditional ones? How do they actually work? And what could they realistically be useful for in the years ahead?
Join us for an evening exploring the fascinating world of quantum computing, from the physical principles behind quantum machines to the algorithms and applications that could shape the future of computing. Welcome to "Qubit or not Qubit?"!

1. FEDERICA MANTEGAZZINI
🇬🇧 How to build a Quantum Computer

ABSTRACT: Quantum computers promise to tackle problems beyond the reach of today's machines, but what are they actually made of? In this talk, we will explore the qubit, the basic building block of a quantum computer, and see how it can be created using real physical systems. Along the way, we will encounter the strange phenomena of superposition and entanglement and discover how they can be turned into a powerful new computing technology.
BIO: Federica Mantegazzini is an experimental physicist and Head of the SQD (Superconducting Quantum Devices) Research Unit at FBK. She is also a Research Fellow at INFN and a lecturer at the University of Trento. She earned a Master's degree in Physics from the University of Milano-Bicocca, where she completed her thesis work at CERN, and holds a PhD from Heidelberg University, where she developed quantum sensors for neutrino physics.
2. ENRICO BLANZIERI
🇬🇧 From quantum Algorithms to practical applications of quantum computing

ABSTRACT: After introducing the gate-based paradigm for quantum algorithms, the concrete example of Grover’s algorithm will be presented and its speed-up discussed. Then, alternative paradigms such as quantum adiabatic computing and quantum annealing will be covered. The talk will finally discuss the challenges of implementing quantum algorithms on current hardware and review practical applications in optimization and machine learning.
BIO: Enrico Blanzieri is Associate Professor at the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science of the University of Trento. His research spanned artificial intelligence, machine learning, multi-agent systems, and he has contributed to research on quantum computing and quantum machine learning.
