Description
Inspired by the mid 90s DIY emo, punk and hardcore movement this workshop will introduce attendees to handprinted and assembled approaches to music packaging. Initially driven by a need to reduce the costs associated with packaging Vinyl records, many DIY artists and record labels in the mid 90s emo, hardcore, punk scene in the USA and Europe adopted a minimal and austere approach to designing the covers and artwork for their releases.
Often characterised by use of readily available and cheap methods and materials these designs were often monotone and regularly featured the use of standard office materials in their construction. Printing methods used included collage, photocopy, risograph, relief and home screen-printing. This 2 hour workshop will introduce participants to these techniques to create their own album cover by the end of the session.
The workshop will begin with an introduction on the history of artwork style with original examples for participants to examine for inspiration. Then leading into a 2 hour practical session to design, print and assemble a finished product.
