SPLINTERS VOLUME 1
Splinters Volume 1 brings three distinct Edinburgh acts to the People’s Leisure Club for a night of noisy guitars, strange electronics, dreamy textures and left-field songwriting.
Headlining are Faliraki, the duo of Jamie Jones-Watt and Lewis Bissett. After meeting at Edinburgh College of Art, the pair began combining poetry with drum loops and guitar riffs, creating music that made them laugh and dance. Their sound brings together scuzz-laden riffs, stripped-back electronics and shouty lyrics dissecting life in small-town Scotland. The result is somewhere between post-punk, electronic music and chaotic guitar music — described as “the kind of dark ecstasy felt by a sack of kittens seconds before it hits the water.”
You Are Lost Be Careful, one of the many musical projects of Evan Hamilton, brings a more unpredictable and expansive sound to the bill. Moving between emo, folk, electronic and alternative music, Hamilton's work is difficult to pin down to one genre. His music includes an album recorded inside the iconic Rosslyn Chapel, reflecting an interest in atmosphere, space and experimentation.
Opening the night is Novalia, a mysterious new Edinburgh band playing their debut show. Drawing from Midwest emo, shoegaze and dream pop, Novalia bring together, hazy textures and melodic songwriting for a first appearance on the live circuit.
Splinters began as a radio show hosted by samwooddoowmas, but Volume 1 marks its move into live music — bringing together artists from different corners of Edinburgh’s music scene who share a willingness to experiment and avoid staying neatly inside one genre.
Three acts. One room. Splinters Volume 1.
