This evidence-based research session will allow participants to share practice and plan engaging next steps to continue driving reading for pleasure across primary and secondary schools.

In this session, participants will have the opportunity to share poetry, widen their knowledge of contemporary poets and experiment with techniques to improve reading fluency. Participants will be supported to develop links between poetry, oracy and writing, as well as creating a whole-school poetry map to build a rich culture of poetry within their school.

Aim:

To explore how poetry fosters pleasure, expression, and community across all age groups.

Focus Areas:

  • Poetry as a tool for reading (and writing) for pleasure
  • Making poetry accessible, performative and joyful
  • Exploring contemporary poets and spoken word
  • Linking poetry to identity, belonging and oracy

Outcomes:

  • Whole-school poetry strategy and booklist
  • Staff confidence in performance, oracy and joyful literacy
  • Increased knowledge of poetry to support enjoyment of reading and writing

This in-person session will be run on:

Tuesday 10 November 2026 from 9 am to 2:45 pm
