A NOTE ABOUT TICKET PACKAGE BUNDLING: We understand you may be coming with a partner/friend and wish for only one book with your tickets. Ticket structure ("bundling") is generally determined by a publisher/author's touring requirements, and bundling a ticket with a book allows us to bring a diverse range of authors to Square Books (as well as support the cost of the event production). The book is a bonus on top of seeing your favorite author speak; plus, signed books make great gifts! Thank you for your understanding and support.
Thank you! We can't wait to see you at the event!

ABOUT THE BOOK
From the charismatic author of Cooking for the Culture, a collection of heritage recipes inspired by the oldest-known published cookbook written by a Black woman.
Cooking from Scratch is chef and storyteller Toya Boudy’s most personal—and most irresistible—cookbook yet. Written during a transformative chapter in her life, it’s infused with the warmth, humor, and grit that have made her a morning-show favorite. Drawing inspiration from Malinda Russell’s groundbreaking 1866 cookbook, A Domestic Cook Book, Boudy reimagines simple, soul-satisfying dishes designed to bring people together. In the wake of divorce and deep self-reflection, she has returned to the kitchen—the place that saved her nearly 30 years ago as a teenage single mom. Cooking from Scratch includes 70 family-loved recipes shaped by the cultures that define her: Mini Crawfish Pies, Jamaican Curry, African Spinach Stew, homey Salisbury Steak, and more. Beyond the table, she shares 20 natural remedies—from herbal cough syrup to “Detox” Lentil Soup—that nourish body and spirit alike.
With every page, Boudy shows how healing, joy, and resilience can begin with something beautifully simple: cooking from scratch.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Chef Toya Boudy is a New Orleans local and the author of Cooking for the Culture. She was crowned Best Home Cook by Hallmark’s Home & Family Channel in 2017, and she has appeared on Today, TLC, CBS, and the Food Network.
ABOUT THE CONVERSATION PARTNER
Chef Erika Lipe was born into a family passionate about cuisine and exploring the world through flavor. As a girl, Erika was influenced strongly by traveling and learning about the gulf coast through art, music, and food, and perhaps most applicably as a young line cook in New Orleans. Like many artists, Erika has naturally been drawn to the water, and spent some time cooking professionally along the Golden Isles of Georgia, including a stint in the Grand Dining Room at The Jekyll Island Club Resort. A native Mississippian, Erika has called Oxford home for the last 19 years, where she is consistently voted “Favorite Chef” and “Best Boss” by her peers and coworkers for the work at her restaurant SoLa, which opened in 2014.
Though her deep-rooted southern charm and reverence for food traditions are based here at home, Erika also enjoys what she refers to as “Third-Culture” cooking: celebrating the bold influence of our immigrant ancestors and neighbors on local cuisine, especially as it relates to the geographic parallels found between the farming and fishing industries of Mississippi and around the world.
In 2024, Erika was crowned the first Queen of Mississippi Seafood and brought home a second place trophy in The Great American Seafood Cook-Off. She also serves as the current champion and official spokesperson of The Tomato Sandwich Society of The South.
