"Bottoms Up"  - The Story of Alcohol in Art

This year's Luncheon at the Moat House Hotel will be preceded by a lecture given by Ian Swankie.

We kick off proceedings with coffee and tea served on arrival at 10.45. The lecture will be followed by a glass of Buck's Fizz and then Luncheon; we expect the day to end around 3.30pm.

Ian is a Londoner with a contagious enthusiasm for art and architecture and is an official guide at Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Guildhall Art Gallery and St Paul’s Cathedral as well as a freelance London tour guide.  He is a very popular lecturer at The Arts Society and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Art Scholars, one of the City livery companies.

This is a talk about booze and intoxication in art. Since the early Romans and Greeks, alcohol has been an important subject for artists. We examine the way drink and drinking are depicted, the social messages portrayed, the happy and unhappy consequences, and how alcohol affected the lives of many artists, their families and friends.

The Luncheon Menu, with three choices for starter, main and dessert is as follows:
