Description
Join the Old Kent Road Mosque for a fast-breaking meal during the month of Ramdan. A delicious and warm opportunity to meet the mosque community and share experiences over a plate of traditional Nigerian food.
Hosted at Staffordshire St to coincide with our exhibition Faith, Place and Migration, the community invites you to join them for an Iftar within the exhibition. An Iftar is a fast-breaking small meal during Ramadan.
Before the meal, the mosque attendees will perform a short prayer on the breaking of the fast.
The Iftar is an opportunity for the congregation and wider public to come together and learn about the traditions of Ramadan, while sharing experiences and memories of the local area.
Tafsir prayer from 5pm- 6pm.
Food will be served from 6pm.
There will be jollof rice with fried chicken, yam porridge with fried meats and fish, as well as vegetable salads with vegan options.
Old Kent Road Mosque and Islamic Cultural Centre is a community hub for Muslims in the UK. They provide prayer facilities, educating people on the foundation of the religion. They facilitate community engagement and provide advice on legal, housing, and well-being matters. Their worship centre at 365 Old Kent Road is currently undergoing redevelopment to a more befitting multi-purpose worship centre.
About the exhibition:
Staffordshire St presents Faith, Place and Migration, co-curated by Shahed Saleem and Julie Marsh in collaboration with the congregation at the Old Kent Road Mosque.
This multi-media installation will introduce the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of London's oldest Nigerian community, the Old Kent Road Mosque. Through this exhibition, the curators question the nature of a community archive and explore how the narratives of community members are embedded in and told through the architecture of their sacred spaces.
Accessibility: There is step-free access to the gallery via the door to the left hand side of the main entrance. There is a wheelchair accessible toilet. The event will be taking place in the exhibition space, which is a large open room with bright lighting and some seating available.
Staffordshire St is an independent project space in Peckham, South East London. The venue facilitates arts and cultural events and provides affordable studios for artists, makers and designers.
Staffordshire St is not-for-profit and all income is invested into developing our public programme which launched the summer of 2022. The venue was established as an art gallery in 2017, before then it was vacant for many years after a community centre closed. Originally it was built as a Methodist Hall. We intend to support a range of cultural events for the local community.
Staffordshire St will build on the established record of these histories, opening up again to the neighbourhood and developing a welcoming interdisciplinary arts space. More information on upcoming events at : info@staffordshirest.com or @staffordshirest
