Staffordshire St MAKES | Past and Future workshop
Sat 9 Mar 2024 12:00 PM - 2:30 PM
Staffordshire St, SE15 5TJ
Description
Old Kent Road Mosque community invites you to gather, share and document community histories through stories, objects and images. Join us to discover community perspectives, and contribute to a local archive.
Hosted as part of the Faith, Place and Migration exhibition at Staffordshire St, we will gather to share memories and experiences of the Old Kent Road mosque with the local community and gallery visitors.
Come on a journey through the mosque’s growth, and explore the memories of the community who made it their home. There’ll be space for discussion around community building, and their aspirations for the future of the mosque.
About the exhibition: Staffordshire St presents Faith, Place and Migration, co-curated by Shahed Saleem and Julie Marsh in collaboration with the congregation at the Old Kent Road Mosque.
This multi-media installation will introduce the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of London's oldest Nigerian community, the Old Kent Road Mosque. Through this exhibition, the curators question the nature of a community archive and explore how the narratives of community members are embedded in and told through the architecture of their sacred spaces.
Accessibility: There is step-free access to the gallery via the door to the left hand side of the main entrance. There is a wheelchair accessible toilet. The event will be taking place in the exhibition space, which is a large open room with bright lighting and some seating available.
Staffordshire St is an independent project space in Peckham, South East London. The venue facilitates arts and cultural events and provides affordable studios for artists, makers and designers.
Staffordshire St is not-for-profit and all income is invested into developing our public programme which launched the summer of 2022. The venue was established as an art gallery in 2017, before then it was vacant for many years after a community centre closed. Originally it was built as a Methodist Hall. We intend to support a range of cultural events for the local community.
Staffordshire St will build on the established record of these histories, opening up again to the neighbourhood and developing a welcoming interdisciplinary arts space. More information on upcoming events at : info@staffordshirest.com or @staffordshirest
