Staffordshire St MAKES | Word Club | Festival of Community Zine Making Workshop
Fri 9 Aug 2024 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM
Staffordshire St, SE15 5TF
Description
Join Elida Silvey in this zine-making workshop as part of Staffordshire St's annual Festival of Community. We will attempt to pin down the fluidity of memory and what they mean to all of us.
Do memories exist as imagery? Do they live within the body? Are they fixed to sound, smell, taste, or do they float about? If they wriggle, change and transform, can we ever truly trap them on a page? Can we ever truly trust what we remember? Or are they bent by the hue of home videos, television static or photo albums.
Using the collect and shape technique, inspired by Dadaist work, I’ll guide participants to help them tap into their subconscious desires, fears and memories to reconcile their experiences of displacement, un-belonging or a split sense of identity. The breakdown of the event would involve an array of texts from which participants can pull inspiration from, a period of free writing based on what they collected and then a moment of writing poetry using the words and/or themes they collected from the texts provided. The aim of this workshop is to help writers of all levels connect with their inner selves and find inspiration in the smallest of things. The hope is for people to finish the workshop feeling inspired to continue working and integrating spontaneity in their everyday work, as well as having a final piece.

Elida Silvey | @elida.silvey | elidasilvey.com :
Elida Silvey is a Mexican-American artist living in London. Her work explores the concept of language and memory as objects stored within the mind. She aims to establish these concrete forms through text in order to cut and collage them to form vignettes of time. To record what is so often forgotten and, in doing so, uncover the entanglement between everyone and everything. Read more of her work at www.elidasilvey.com or on IG @elida.silvey.
About the Festival of Community 2024:
Staffordshire St presents our annual Festival of Community. The collaborative programme of workshops, events and fiestas will celebrate our neighbourhood and the communities that fill its streets.
This year Pipe Dreams, a collaborative project conjured by Jimi and Madeleine Famurewa, will form the centrepiece of the Festival - prepare to be transported to the half-remembered fantasia of a London orbital waterpark in the mid-1990s.
Exploring notions of community, place and belonging, over the summer Staffordshire St will become a locus for playful creativity and celebratory knowledge sharing.
Accessibility: There is step-free access to the gallery via the door to the left hand side of the main entrance. There is a wheelchair accessible toilet. The event will be taking place in the exhibition space, which is a large open room with bright lighting and some seating available.
Staffordshire St is an independent project space in Peckham, South East London. The venue facilitates arts and cultural events and provides affordable studios for artists, makers and designers.
Staffordshire St is not-for-profit and all income is invested into developing our public programme which launched the summer of 2022. The venue was established as an art gallery in 2017, before then it was vacant for many years after a community centre closed. Originally it was built as a Methodist Hall. We intend to support a range of cultural events for the local community.
Staffordshire St will build on the established record of these histories, opening up again to the neighbourhood and developing a welcoming interdisciplinary arts space. More information on upcoming events at : info@staffordshirest.com or @staffordshirest
