Areen Hassan | @by_areen :
Areen Hassan (b. 1994) is a Palestinian artist based in Dubai. Lamlameh لملمة; Gathering marks her first presentation in the UK. She has a bachelor's degree in Textile Design and Art in 2018. Her artistic practice has always aligned closely with textiles, in form and in its principles. Drawing on embroidery as a part of her heritage, Areen continuously experiments with modernising traditional methods. She incorporates multimedia techniques to explore transparency and to invert the conventional function of materials, pushing the boundaries of textile art.
Areen has participated in numerous collective exhibitions across Palestine, New York, Paris, Munich, Hamburg, Ankara, Beirut, Doha, Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Algeria, Manama, Bahrain, Antwerp, Belgium, and Łódź, Poland. She received the Justus Brinckmann Award at MK&G Museum, Hamburg, Germany, in 2019 and was shortlisted for the Doha Design Prize in 2024. In 2025, she was selected to showcase her work at Maison&Objet under the Cultural Grants Programme, an initiative by Dubai Culture. Her first solo show, By Areen بيد عرين , was supported by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities and presented at The Art Centre, Manama, Bahrain, in 2022. The same year, she held her solo show The Mother Thread, supported by Khawla Art and Culture at Dubai Design District, Dubai, UAE. In 2023, Areen was commissioned to produce a public art installation for Dubai Design Week.
About the exhibition:
The concept of لملمة (v. lamlameh), proposed by Professor Abeer R. Musleh, is a process of lifting fallen pieces, gathering and weaving together.
Within the exhibition, the works of Areen Hassan and Tatreez Collective will do just this – welcoming a choir of woven voices into the space as global tales of so many displaced Palestinian people are stitched into the fabric of each artwork.
Every fibre connected in these beautifully crafted textiles becomes a powerful representation of the deep, ever-burning endurance of the Palestinian people.
Walk amongst these voices, give time and visibility to each story, and witness the collective action of لملمة; Gathering.
Accessibility: There is step-free access to the gallery via the door to the left hand side of the main entrance. There is a wheelchair accessible toilet. The event will be taking place in the exhibition space, which is a large open room with bright lighting and some seating available. Our accessibility rider is available here.
Staffordshire St is an independent project space in Peckham, South East London. The venue facilitates arts and cultural events and provides affordable studios for artists, makers and designers.
Staffordshire St is not-for-profit and all income is invested into developing our public programme which launched the summer of 2022. The venue was established as an art gallery in 2017, before then it was vacant for many years after a community centre closed. Originally it was built as a Methodist Hall. We intend to support a range of cultural events for the local community.
Staffordshire St will build on the established record of these histories, opening up again to the neighbourhood and developing a welcoming interdisciplinary arts space. More information on upcoming events at : info@staffordshirest.com or @staffordshirest
