STST Makes | Trans Chorus: Generative Voice & Movement | Workshop

Trans Chorus is a space for trans+ people to revel in our sounds and movements. We lean into how our bodies may sit outside of normative expectations, using communal singing, gentle movement, rhythm and improvisation as the primary tools of exploration.

Every 3rd Sunday of the month, Trans Chorus hosts a workshop at Staffordshire St for trans+ folks at the intersections of disability, chronic illness and neurodivergence. Workshops focus on experimenting with the voice and movement to find embodied paths to creativity, routes which are generative for our bodies and support states of regulation.

We recommend attendees wear clothes you can move in and bring a bottle of water plus some snacks if you need it! All movements will be accessible to people of all abilities.

We welcome everyone who falls under the spectrum of transgender, whether that means your gender differs from the gender you were/are assigned, your gender can't be contained within binary prescriptions of gender, or you are at a stage of questioning your gender.

Trans Chorus | @transchorus :

Trans Chorus (TC) is a creative somatic space run for and by trans, gender non-conforming (gnc) and gender questioning people. TC values:
1. The voice as a means of rest and play.
2. Creating equitable space that raises the voices of disabled and global majority trans+ people.
3. Somatic practices as a means of creating sustained liberatory movements.

Trans Chorus embarks on Generative - a year long residency at Staffordshire St that explores how singing and moving in community can support trans+ disabled folks to thrive in a hostile world. Trans Chorus will offer monthly workshops for trans and gender non-conforming folks at the margins of disability, chronic illness and neurodivergence. Workshops will be led by vocal and movement facilitators whose practices are rooted in finding embodied paths to creativity, routes which are generative for our bodies and support states of regulation. Using singing, movement, improvisation and rhythm as the primary tools for exploration, Trans Chorus will co-create a toolkit of accessible embodied exercises that trans+ disabled folks can tap into.

Accessibility: There is step-free access to the gallery via the door to the left hand side of the main entrance. There is a wheelchair accessible toilet. The event will be taking place in the exhibition space, which is a large open room with bright lighting and some seating available. View our accessibility rider here. 

Staffordshire St is an independent project space in Peckham, South East London. The venue facilitates arts and cultural events and provides affordable studios for artists, makers and designers. ​

Staffordshire St is not-for-profit and all income is invested into developing our public programme which launched the summer of 2022. The venue was established as an art gallery in 2017, before then it was vacant for many years after a community centre closed. Originally it was built as a Methodist Hall. We intend to support a range of cultural events for the local community.
