The Studio Dilemma-artist Richard Phoenix reflects on the imporance of the 'unobserved space’ to art/music making

Join us for an STST Assembly with Richard Phoenix, an artist integrating painting, writing, music and facilitation and author of Do Your Own Thing (2023). Richard will speak about the importance of the 'unobserved space' in art and music making, reflecting on my his own experiences of art at school, being a part of diy/punk scenes, the supported studio (and being a facilitator) as well as communal studio spaces,

This Assembly is specifically focused on discussing issues around supported studios and barriers to artists. We encourage artists who who need support to work or who struggle working individually to join us and share their thoughts. As well as cultural organisations who operate studios or aim to exhibit artists who face barriers to traditional representation.

STST Assembly is a monthly critical talk series and meeting place focused on contemporary art. Each session centres on a different question, thematic strand or cultural practice. Through intimate dialogues it platforms invited speakers, alongside an open floor conversation that encourages shared learning.

Richard Phoenix | @richardjphoenix

Richard Phoenix is an artist integrating painting, writing, music and facilitation. Making work that explores the rhythm, harmony and dissonance to be found in co-operation, support and art-making and the resulting balance between care and domination to be navigated.

Arriving at painting not through formal education but through many years playing in D.I.Y. bands and working within learning disability arts as creative support, these experiences profoundly influenced the way Richard approaches making and thinking about art.

Accessibility: There is step-free access to the gallery via the door to the left hand side of the main entrance. There is a wheelchair accessible toilet. The event will be taking place in the exhibition space, which is a large open room with bright lighting and some seating available. View our accessibility rider here.

Staffordshire St is an independent project space in Peckham, South East London. The venue facilitates arts and cultural events and provides affordable studios for artists, makers and designers.

Staffordshire St is not-for-profit and all income is invested into developing our public programme which launched the summer of 2022. The venue was established as an art gallery in 2017, before then it was vacant for many years after a community centre closed. Originally it was built as a Methodist Hall. We intend to support a range of cultural events for the local community.

Staffordshire St will build on the established record of these histories, opening up again to the neighbourhood and developing a welcoming interdisciplinary arts space. More information on upcoming events at : info@staffordshirest.com or @staffordshirest
