Staines Opera Recital - 'Musical Theatre Origins': Mozart to Rodgers and Hammerstein

Sun 22 Nov 2026 3:30 PM - 5:30 PM St Mary's Church, Vicarage Rd, Staines TW18 4YF

Following the success of the twelth recital in the Staines Opera Recitals series, we present 'Musical Theatre Origins': Mozart to Rodgers and Hammerstein.

This concert showcases partly why Mozart was father of opera and musical theatre to come. The first half will mostly be Mozart opera, and then in the second half we have some Gilbert and Sullivan (who parodied styles of opera for comedy) and Rodgers and Hammerstein (who created an amazing franchise of musical theatre which the world continues to enjoy time and time again in mainstream culture)

Mozart opera is not as grand as a lot of the romantic opera we do in the series, and so for this the audience is encouraged to sit in ground floor pews, so that the performances can be more intimate. The church will start getting cold at this time of year and so large electric heaters will be on but do bring a coat!

Hot drinks will be served in the interval.

I am being joined by a number of wonderful professionals, many who have performed in Staines before as part of my projects, but a special warm welcome to my Teddington January Operetta fellow performers, maestro, Tom Higgins, and virtuoso, Tony Lamb.

Ticketing is only via this online source. Parking is available on the church grounds (entrance via Wraysbury Road), and entrance to the church is *only* via the west end blue door (the bell tower side).

Do stay behind after to talk to all of us, not least to chat to our resident poster designer, Carolyn Carty.

Grazie mille, Giovanni (John)
