10.30am: Launch of What the Sea Saw, a digital film celebrating the fishing history of Staithes. Followed by a discussion and free refreshments
Proud to premiere a new short film made for Staithes Museum celebrating village fishing heritage. Personal memories of Staithes' fishing community mixed with rarely seen archive photographs. The film is part of community heritage project What the Sea Saw, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The screening will be followed by a Q&A / audience discussion with members of the local fishing community, Staithes museum, and writer Helena Fox who conducted the interviews in the film. Upstairs at St Peter’s Centre 10.30-11.30am Free entry, refreshments provided.
11.45am: Staithes Gallery owner Alison Milnes The Staithes Group of Artists 1880-1915
An illustrated snapshot about the Impressionist art colony in Staithes at the turn of the Twentieth Century, who became famed for their plein air outdoor paintings. Upstairs at St Peter’s Centre, 11.45-12.45 £4
1pm: Gordon Hetherington Gertrude Bell, The uncrowned Queen of Iraq
Brought up in Redcar in a wealthy family of ironmasters, Gertrude generally defied Victorian social conventions. She was one of the earliest women attending Oxford and the first to obtain a first-class degree in modern history. Fiercely intelligent and determined, she’s famed for her skilled mountaineering, journeys through the desert as an archaeologist, involvement in the formation of Iraq with TE Lawrence and Winston Churchill, and for founding their national museum. Dubbed the Queen of the. Desert, she led a life extraordinary for a woman in a man’s world. Upstairs at St Peter’s Centre 1pm-2pm £4
2pm: Artist Ian Burke’s printing workshop based on African masks
A rare chance to learn from the former art master at Eton College. Carve a 5x3cm block with the image of a face / head mask based on African sculpture and art. Then print in the form of an African textile print. No drawing is necessary, or experience of printing required. Includes instruction and safety methods when using carving tools. Over 15 years of age. Gallery 17, The Schoolroom under the Wesleyan Chapel, Chapel Yard. £15 per person (inc. materials) 2-3pm 12 spaces only. Workshop must be booked in advance
2.15pm: CANCELLED DUE TO ILLNESS National Trust Cultural Heritage Curator Jonathan Wallis A Creative Life - The story of Ruth Pennyman of Ormesby Hall
Ruth Pennyman and her husband Jim are well known for their work during
the 1930s helping out of work Cleveland miners, but Ruth was an intriguing mix of creativity and political interest. Jonathan will explore her life before her marriage as a professional artist and what skills she brought to her life at Ormesby and to the people of Teesside, Cleveland and North Yorkshire more widely. 2.15pm: Dark Matter: Chris Toth A SECOND TALK OF THE DAY, BY PUBLIC DEMAND!
Chris Toth is back by public demand and ready to illuminate the mysterious world of the ever-elusive Dark Matter they're working on in Boulby mine's Underground Laboratory. He’ll report on the experiments conducted 1.1km beneath our feet in a light-hearted physics lecture for all ages. No prior physics knowledge required! Upstairs at St Peter’s Centre 2.15-3.15pm £4

10.30am: Fossiliam (Dr Liam Herringshaw) - paleontologist and director of the Yorkshire Fossil Festival: Jurassic Staithes - storms before extinction
The Jurassic rocks and fossils found around Staithes are some of the finest in the world. Every year, Earth scientists come from far and wide to study them, and what they reveal about life and death in ancient oceans. Liam explains how Staithes tells a tale of stormy seas that suddenly became stinky, and how Jurassic paleontology helps us predict how sea life might fare in the man-made climate crisis. 1pm: Poet and comedian Andy Blackford’s Stand-up tragedy tour
In 1970, Andy was voted Man Least Likely To Make 30. But after careers as a rock guitarist, adventure runner, poet and ad writer (Um Bongo, Nat West Piggies), he's still with us, recalling his life in funny and sometimes shocking stories. St Peter’s Centre Upstairs 1pm-2pm £4

Dame Laura Knight spent her formative years as an artist in the village. She became the first woman elected to the Royal Academy and Britain's official war artist at the Nuremberg Trials. 3.30pm: Dr Robb Robinson : A history of the Yorkshire coast fishing industry
Fishing is one of Yorkshire's very earliest forms of occupation and Dr Robinson, Honorary Research fellow from the University of Hull, examines the nature of the county's fishing industry and the remarkable range of its trading connections and activities. PLUS panel discussion with Staithes fishermen John Cole, Bill Hinchley, and Colin Harrison. Upstairs at St Peter’s 3.30-4.45pm £4
