Q&A with Larry Achiampong followed by a screening of his feature-length film Wayfinder, 2022, run time: 83 mins
Wayfinder (2022) is Achiampong’s most ambitious film to date. Set in a pandemic, it follows the Wanderer, a young girl played by Perside Rodrigues, on an intrepid journey across England. Travelling from North to South, she passes through different regions, towns and landscapes, encountering people, stories and situations on her way. Across six chapters, including ‘The North’, ‘The Big Smoke’ and ‘The Kingdom of the East’, this epic film builds a dialogue about class and economic exclusion, belonging and displacement, cultural heritage and the meaning of home. The Wanderer acts as a witness to accounts, conversations, places and histories.
This screening accompanies Larry Achiampong’s solo show 'A Letter, A Pledge' on show at Stanley Picker Gallery, Kingston University until 28 March 2024. The exhibition is the result of Achiampong's Stanley Picker Fellowship and it centres around two moving image works, processing the imprints of depression, inherited trauma, digital anxiety and Black Masculinity. The films delicately unfurl the tensions of dislocation, lost kin and grief, while placing the visitors in an environment filled with sculptural elements, Ashante stool, games and karate mats, reflecting on the Okinawan karate’s ‘hard-soft style’.
