Snowdon ( Yr Wyddfa ) - 8 miles

The route we will do is one of the best ways to experience Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) because you get two completely different sides of the mountain: the dramatic, rocky Pyg Track on the way up, and the beautiful lakes and old mining landscape of the Miners’ Track on the way down.

We will be leaving the Ger y Llyn car park, Llanberis, Caernarfon LL55 4TY at 8am for a short walk to catch the 08.25 bus to Pen Y Pass to start the hike. Bus trip takes 15 mins.

Please ensure you arrive in plenty of time to pay and display for your car. Return bus costs £5.50.

Highlights -

Summit of Yr Wyddfa/Snowdon at 1,085 metres (3,560 ft) — the highest mountain in Wales and the highest point in the British Isles outside Scotland.

Starting at Pen-y-Pass, already at around 359 metres, means you begin high in the mountains and immediately enter spectacular scenery.

The Pyg Track gives superb elevated views over Llyn Llydaw and Glaslyn, with the dramatic peaks of the Snowdon Massif and the Glyderau surrounding you.

You'll pass close to the famous Crib Goch ridge — although the route we are taking does not go over Crib Goch.

At the summit, on a clear day, the views can stretch across the mountains of Eryri/Snowdonia and, in exceptionally clear conditions, towards the Irish Sea and Ireland.

At the summit is Hafod Eryri, the mountain-top visitor centre/café, which is open seasonally and subject to conditions.

The descent via the Miners’ Track takes you through the spectacular mountain scenery around Glaslyn and Llyn Llydaw, including the remains of the old copper-mining industry.

The route gives us a great contrast: high-level mountain walking on the Pyg Track, followed by beautiful lakes, history and old mining ruins on the Miners’ Track. 

Distance and time - 

For the Pyg Track up and Miners’ Track down:

📏 Distance: around 12–13 km (7.5–8 miles)

⬆️ Total ascent: roughly 720–730 metres (2,360–2,400 ft)

⏱️ Walking time: approximately 5–6 hours, depending on the fitness and pace of the group, weather, stops and how long we spend at the summit.

This a serious mountain walk, please bring layers, poles and enough water/food to sustain you.
