Solar Eclipse - Burton Dassett walk - 6 miles

Join us on this six mile circular walk starting and finishing in the Burton Dassett hills country park.

On Wednesday 12 August, the UK will see a partial solar eclipse, with around 90–92% of the Sun covered depending on your location. Around Burton Dassett it'll be just over 90%. 

Time and Date

The eclipse starts at about 6:15 pm, reaches its maximum around 7:10–7:15 pm, and finishes just after 8:00 pm.

Even at maximum, it will not be safe to look directly at the Sun without certified eclipse glasses. Regular sunglasses are not safe.

As the Sun becomes covered, you may notice the light becoming strangely dim, temperatures dropping slightly, and shadows becoming unusually sharp.

 Please bring ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses.

Phone camera solar filters are great for photos, but never use your phone to look at the Sun unless it has a proper solar filter fitted.

The highlights of your route will be:

The panoramic views – on a clear evening you can see across Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and into the Cotswolds. Sunset up there can be spectacular. 

The Beacon Tower – the iconic stone tower on the summit. It dates from the late 15th century and may have been used as a beacon, a windmill or even a warrener's lodge. 

The old ironstone quarries, which give the hills their distinctive shape and rugged feel. Mining took place here until the early 20th century. 

We will also be walking through pretty villages like Fenny Compton and Avon Dassett.

Burton Dassett was once a much larger settlement. The original village gradually declined, leaving the isolated church on the hillside. The surrounding hills became important because of their rich ironstone deposits, leading to extensive quarrying in Victorian times. The country park itself opened in 1971 to protect the landscape and preserve its historical features.

Please bring water/snacks, warm layers and a head torch.
